Every surgical intervention in humans comes with a level of risk.
For this reason every potential risk must be carefully evaluated and balanced against the expected benefit, before surgery is decided upon. Specialised orthopaedic surgery at the Gelenk Klinik starts with a thorough decision making process.
General Anaesthesia provides a complete loss of consciousness and pain sensation during surgery, it is therefore the method of anaesthesia that causes the least stress on the body during orthopaedic surgery.
Modern ultrasound guided partial anaesthesia can replace general anaesthesia in almost all cases of orthopedic surgery.
Patients are able to stay awake during partial anaesthesia. They may also fall into a shallow sleep during surgery, if only a mild sedative is used. The level and type of anaesthesia chosen, depends on the desire of the individual patient to observe arthroscopic surgery on a screen.
